An exciting decade ahead for aerospace
ConferenceJohn Wilson,
Key Account Director,
Russam GMS

In February I attended The International Aerospace Exchange in London and this year's conference was busier than ever. 180 people from 140 organisations attended keynote speeches about the future of international aerospace delivered by thought leaders in the commercial aerospace industry.

They also flocked to workshops hosted by Boeing, Airbus, GKN Aerospace, Thales, Selex, Eurocopter, GE Aviation, Bombardier, Thales and Spirit Aerosystems.

The universal mood at the conference was bullish. According to experts, the sector has to prepare itself for significant growth and have the ability and resources to participate in the internationalisation of manufacturing and services. However, whilst it was noted that Primes and most Tier 1 suppliers are well positioned to deal with this market development, this may not be the case for many SMEs or suppliers lower down the supply chain.

Ian Godden, Chairman of ADS, highlighted that the current build level of 3500 aircraft in 2010 will almost double to 6000 by 2020. Additionally, whilst Europe and USA dominate manufacturing now, there is a steady growth in the aerospace industries in China, India, Russia and Brazil.

Frank Bamford, Senior VP, Business Development & Strategy at GKN Aerospace stressed that SMEs will need to develop innovative growth strategies and expand their "global reach" and be "local for global". He suggested this could be achieved by forming consortia or partnering with larger organisations.

He said that their business growth would depend on:

Having a business strategy in place

Developing technology and skills

Having a robust quality led supply chain

Thinking and acting globally

Patrick McKenna, Director of Supply Chain Strategy at Boeing affirmed the company's strong and vital presence in UK and the tremendous market potential that exists over the next 20 years. He said that what Boeing looks for in their partners are:

Flawless management of capacity, flow, cost and delivery

Innovation

Collaboration

Mark Haisman, VP of Aerostructures Procurement at Airbus shared their strategic vision for 2020 - parity with Boeing top of the list. He also identified the strategic challenges of market globalisation for the industry, price pressures and exchange risks.

The Procurement Contractor Workshops focused on how niche technology businesses and other SMEs could engage effectively with Primes and Tier 1 suppliers, with an emphasis on supporting international growth over the next 20 years.

In the face of these challenges UKTI and ADS published their UK Aerospace International Strategy 2011, which identifies the major opportunities in international markets in the next 12 to 18 months. It highlights that China and India will emerge as the markets for civil aerospace and for partnerships in the next 10 years. Additionally, due to their sheer volume, Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, COMAC and Embraer programmes represent the principal opportunities for the supply chain in the next decade. The report highlights the need for aerospace companies and the government to cooperate more closely to combat the challenge of supply chain globalisation.

It is clear that notwithstanding the current economic challenges facing both developed and developing nations, the outlook for the commercial aerospace industry is exciting and dynamic.

Our database contains a wealth of talented executives with experience of the aerospace sector and expertise in development of supply chains in global markets.
