Executive Leader - Oxford
Ref: 128335 - Church Mission Society (CMS)
VIEW/DOWNLOAD CMS has a long and distinguished track record. It is a future that will empower Christians, transform communities and grow the church – as God inspires and provides. Tim Dakin led many significant changes in the last 11 years and, as he moves to become Bishop of Winchester, they seek a person to join them to lead the next stage of the exciting journey.

CMS faces a number of challenges. Their place as an acknowledged community of the Church of England is a relatively new expression which is being given life, particularly as CMS Britain engages more with Europe and the UK in sharing good news; the networked model of relationships (e.g. with CMS Africa and AsiaCMS) is emerging and being tested; there has been a notable reduction in staff, yet their outgoings still exceed regular income. Historical generosity has left good funding levels, but there are many more mission opportunities than they can meet.

In weighing up the personal emphasis of the leader, the trustees have singled out 3 main contributions:

• hold the CMS vision; encourage everyone to move securely in implementation and embedding;

• bring out the best in all parts of the CMS teams, using their skills and experience;

• lead the development of the acknowledged community.

The trustees have set no fixed background for the leader – they welcome interest from a diverse pool – male and female, ordained and lay, British and others. Yet, they have some clear characteristics in mind.

They seek someone who is deeply committed to CMS’s purpose and ethos; who will enjoy being the “face” of CMS, engaging and inspiring different audiences and individuals; particularly the Church of England and
Anglican Communion. They are looking for an implementer, who can also draw out the next stages of strategy and plans. They are cross-cultural and seek a leader who can catalyse and capitalise on networks and partnerships. As all recruiters, they might have a long “wish list”, but are realistic that this is a leader of a team, community and organisation – where much is achieved with and through others.
